UMass Boston has succeeded in producing researchers, CEOs and politicians — but what future visionaries walk these halls today?
Senior Millicent Snow, an on-campus leader and active member of many student organizations, said the students are “one of the greatest resources this school has to offer.”
Snow will graduate from UMass Boston’s Honors College in spring 2025. She is majoring in criminology with a minor in English, and recently accepted a job at Fidelity Investments as a compliance analyst after she graduates. Snow’s impact on UMass Boston materializes through her student involvement.
Snow is the chair of student organizations and finance for Undergraduate Student Government. She leads the committee that oversees the funding of events and student organizations, and manages the fiscal year budget for student activities. She is also the vice president of HerCampus and The Swift Society and a member of the Pre-Law Society, the National Society for Leadership and Success and the Paul English AI Institute.
It hasn’t always been easy, though. Snow transferred to UMass Boston in the fall of 2022 after a semester in a dual-enrollment high school program and a year at Franklin Pierce University. She described her arrival at UMass Boston as lonely.
“I was adjusting to a new state, new city, and completely new lifestyle. I started joining different clubs to integrate myself on campus and begin growing my network and friend group,” she wrote. Initially timid and anxious, she used her commitment to student organizations to find herself and her place in the community.
In addition to her on-campus involvement, she credits her confidence to a mentor program she participated in one summer. Her mentor guided her through learning to self-advocate and be comfortable with herself.
“I think I’ll always struggle with being brave, as there are plenty of scary things out there like clowns, black widow spiders, and driving through the tunnels in Boston, but I will always try and conquer them and push through,.” Snow wrote. She encourages other students to do the same: putting themselves out there and being bold.
Snow also encourages students, especially those new to UMass Boston, to join student organizations to make lasting connections.
“Clubs are a great way to make friends that share the same interests as you,” she wrote. “You’ll carry these friendships for lifetimes, and you should always make an effort to maintain those relationships.” These connections have helped her see new perspectives and improve independently. These perspectives have been attributed to much of her growth and success.
Apart from her influence on student life at UMass Boston, Snow is most proud of her success in her field.
“I feel so grateful and lucky to have landed a role for after I graduate as the semester is kicking off. The weight on my shoulders about what I should do is gone,” she wrote. She also detailed her struggle between furthering her education with law school or going into the workforce. She said this stress being relieved can help her enjoy her senior year and focus on her current favorite game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Snow encourages anyone to reach out to her, and is always ready to lend a hand. She writes, “Please if you need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out! You need to rant, I’ll be your ear, you need a friend, I’ll be your friend, if you need a snack, I probably have one.”
