Matt Muelo is the best athlete you haven’t heard of yet on the UMass Boston campus.

Muelo, a freshman from Stoneham, MA, was named the Little East’s Field Rookie of the Week for the week of March 31, when he won the shot put and discus throw at the Rhode Island Invitational.

He deserved the award for his performance in last weekend’s fourth annual “Corsair” Classic Track and Field Invitational held at UMass Dartmouth.

Muelo swept the discus throw and the shot put for a second straight event, heaving the shot put 12.69 meters, while his discus throw (37.78 m) was more than four meters further than the 33.35 m Northern Essex Community College’s runner-upTyler Pagley mustered.

After finishing in the middle of the pack at UMass Boston’s first competition, the MIT Invitational on March 22 (7th in the shot put, 15th in the discus throw), Muelo has been unbeatable among Division III athletes.

The MIT Invitational featured athletes from some of the region’s most prestigious schools, such as Brown, Boston University, Northeastern and Holy Cross.

Muelo was not the only Beacons track and field performer who appeared near the top of the leader board last Saturday. Senior runner Tara Sweeney finished second in the women’s 1500 meter run with a time of 5:11.69, while junior Mariama Njie finished seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.07.

Jessica Sams, who is also a goalie for the Lady Beacons hockey team, finished third in the women’s shot put with a heave of 9.73 m and fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 24.11 m.

Emile Pierre-Louis, who features himself on the men’s soccer team as well, qualified for New England Division III Regionals and the ECAC Championships with a time of 11.63 in the 100 meter dash.

Among the others who qualified for the two events were Matt Muelo in the shot put and discus throw, Mike Leavitt in the 10,000 meter run, Antonio Francis in the 200 meter dash and Mariama Njie in the women’s 100 meter dash.

The men and women compete once again Saturday, April 26, in the LEC Alliance Meet at UMass Dartmouth before the New England Division III Regionals and ECAC Championships, which are held at Springfield College and start up the first and second weeks of May.
