The Mass Media is UMass Boston’s award-winning independent student newspaper, publishing in print and online on alternating Mondays. On weeks we don’t print, we still cover time-sensitive stories and breaking news here on our website and social media accounts.
To ensure that we produce a reliable, relevant and factual paper, The Mass Media employs a team of paid student writers, editors and photographers with skills in reporting, writing, editing, photojournalism, art, design, production, business and more. We also accept guest articles and letters to the editor from members of the UMass Boston community, including students, staff and alumni. Opinions expressed in individual columns are those of their respective authors and do not represent the views of The Mass Media or its entire staff.
The team is led by the editor in chief and managing editor, who are selected by the previous editors and serve indefinite terms. We make decisions about our coverage without input from university administrators, faculty or staff. Our funding comes directly from students in the form of a waivable student fee, and we are not affiliated with any journalism class or communications program on campus. Our first and only obligation is the truth.
The Mass Media is a member of the College Media Association and Society of Professional Journalists. Our staff abides by the SPJ Code of Ethics in addition to The Mass Media’s editorial policies, which are available here for the public to view.
In April 2026, SPJ recognized The Mass Media with its 2025 Region 1 Mark of Excellence Award for illustration. We were also finalists in the feature photography and breaking news reporting categories. Professional journalists with at least three years’ experience in each of SPJ’s 12 regions serve as judges, and may award a maximum of one winner and two finalists in each category. They are directed to choose entries that were among the best in student journalism.
