Someone was going to pay. That someone just happened to be Plymouth State.

Josh Stolp netted seven goals, and junior midfielder and co-captain Phil Pittorino tallied ten points as the UMass Boston Beacons secured their sixth victory of the season, destroying the Panthers of Plymouth State, 23-4.

Although the Beacons were coming off a 14-5 victory over Clark University last Thursday, the two previous games against Little East Conference foes Eastern Connecticut State and UMass Dartmouth left a bad taste in their mouths. With the regular season winding down, the team realizes that it start playing better, especially against conference opponents.

The Panthers were out of the game by the end of the first period. UMB bombarded the Panthers goalie Dan Egan with shot after shot in a relentless and impressive attack. Crisp passing and fluid movement on offense kept the Panthers’ defense off balance.

The team’s second leading goal scorer, Mike Forns, had good rapport with Pittorino on the final goal. The two played a game of keep away from the Panthers’ defensemen, until a lane opened up for Pittorino, who rifled a shot past Egan for a the Beacons’ ninth goal.

The Beacons kept up the pressure on the Panthers in the second period, outscoring the Plymouth State 6-2. At one point, UMB scored three goals in the short span of 35 seconds as the Beacons went into halftime with a 15-3 lead.

The third period was not much different from the second, as the Beacons notched another six goals and surrendered only one. UMass Boston coach Myles Berry pulled goalie Jonny Walker who registered seven saves on eleven shots and inserted senior Jason Gardner, who stopped all four shots he faced in the game’s final 23 minutes.

Other Beacons who made significant contributions on the score sheet were sophomore midfielder Sing Phetvixay (two goals and two assists) and senior midfielder Jay Chisholm, who scored a season high three goals.

The win was the Beacons’ sixth for the Beacons overall and their second in Little East Conference play. The Panthers record fell to 4-7 and 2-3. The Beacons conclude the regular season with the home season finale against Salve Regina on Thursday April 25 and an important match up with Little East Conference rival Keene State on Saturday April 27.
