Leave the bagels and cream cheese

Leave the bagels and cream cheese

Ever find yourself at school early and you wish there were someplace to grab a good breakfast? Or a good lunch for that matter? Well, jump on the red line and head down one stop to Savin Hill and you’ll find McKenna’s Café at 109 Savin Hill Ave (about 50 yards to the left of the Savin Hill T station).

McKenna’s is strictly a breakfast and lunch place. It’s only open until 3:30PM every day. But it’s open bright and early for breakfast; 5:30AM Monday through Saturday and 6:30AM on Sundays. The interior is simple and cozy with plenty of room for all of the diners you’ll find. Policemen, families, local regulars, and students all enjoy the great service by a welcoming staff. Sit at the tables or the counter, your choice. Breakfast consists of all your favorites, from Omelets (13 different kinds ranging from the classic Western [ham, onions, peppers] to the more radical Killer Cajun [spicy Cajun chicken breast, mushrooms, Monterey jack cheese, and onions]) to Eggs Benedict. Eggs, homefries, bacon, sausage, crepes, pancakes, and French toast-you’ll find it all here. If you’re only up for a bagel or a simple bowl of cereal, they’ve got that too. McKenna’s does breakfast all day (or at least until they close), but they also do lunch as well.

Lunch also has pretty much everything you could possibly be looking for in a quick bite to eat. Sandwiches like those you’d find in any great lunch place, such as cold cuts (turkey, ham, roast beef, pastrami), burgers, hotdogs, chicken parmesan, and meatball subs. They’re all here. They’ve got sides that will compliment any meal; regular French fries (or for the more daring, Sweet Potato Fries), onion rings, chicken fingers, buffalo chicken, and mozzarella sticks. Looking for soups and salads too? They’ve got them and they’ll make a meal in themselves. Sick of the same old sandwiches? Want something a little more substantial? Get the steak tips, the chicken quesadillas, or the ziti and meatballs. They’re all good.

It’s called a café which means, you guessed it, coffee. Freshly brewed dark roast, hazelnut, or French vanilla; the perfect ending to any meal, especially when the cold winter hits soon. They also have Espresso, cappuccino, lattes, Chai, hot teas, iced teas, and frozen coffee drinks. The menu at McKenna’s is chock full of good stuff. So, the next time you find yourself at school with some time to spare between the hours of 5:30 and 3:30, head on down to McKenna’s Café and get yourself something good to eat.
