UMB Baseball Suffers Same Fate

By Jason Campos

Pitcher Brooke Morris tossed a one hit shutout and shortstop Cherie Bailey went three for three, including a home run, with three RBI as the Colonials of Western Connecticut State took the first game of a doubleheader against the UMass Boston Beacons, 4-0.

The Beacons never mounted any kind of threat against Morris. The only hit for UMass Boston came from shortstop Kristen Bowes, who hit a fifth inning double.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, an error and a hit gave the Colonials two base runners after there were already two outs. Bailey came to the plate and she sent a ball to the outfield that allowed her to circle the bases. The homerun gave Western Connecticut State a 3-0 lead. The Colonials tacked on another run in the top seventh inning.

UMB pitcher Andrea Spinale pitched another complete game, giving up a total of four runs on ten hits while striking out three batters and yielding two walks.

The second game of the doubleheader was not a pretty one for the Beacons. Bailey had three more hits, and Eileen Bailey and Dez Lanphear had four hits apiece as the Colonials cruised to a 16-3 triumph.

The Beacons scored the first run in the game. With two outs and Bowes on third base, Colonial pitcher Kathryn Helbig threw a pitch that skipped by catcher Sandra Bergers to the backstop. Bowes took off for home and beat the throw to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead.

The Colonials took the lead in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and no outs, Lanphear drilled a single to score C. Bailey and Amy Warren. Lanphear, Amy Warren, and Christine Valie later score in the inning for a 5-1 Colonial lead.

The Beacons sliced the lead in half in the bottom half of the third inning. Centerfielder Johanna Grullon reached first base on an error by Helbig. Leftfielder Gina Torres came up next and lace a ball to right field for a single. The Colonial rightfielder Warren tried to throw out Torres at first, but the throw was wide and hit Torres in the hand. Grullon scored on the play and Torres went to second.

The next batter was Spinale who bunted the ball toward E. Bailey. Bailey threw the ball away, allowing Torres to score the third run for the Beacons.

The Beacons’ offense was shut down after the third and the Colonials tacked on 11 more runs during the next three innings for the final score of 16-3. The loss went to pitcher Andrea Spinale. Her record dropped to 3-19.

The Beacons still do not have a Little East Conference win this season. Their overall record is 5-19 and their conference record is 0-8. Western Connecticut State improved their record to 21-6-1, and 8-1-1 in the Little East Conference.
