Billionaire and property tycoon Donald Trump will be coming to UMass Boston. Well, sort of.

Broadcasting live via a satellite feed, Trump, star of NBC’s The Apprentice, will make an appearance at the Living Leadership conference, being hosted this year at UMass Boston.”It’s a high-profile event,” said Andrew Scribner-MacLean, a Campus Center administrator. “We’re excited to have them.”

The all-day business and management conference, spanning four time zones, is being simulcast across the nation, with Trump and other speakers, including former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev and “CEO of Hip Hop” Russell Simmons, broadcasting from Atlanta. Corporate Bostonians will be gathering in the Campus Center.

Boston University hosted the event last year. Attendance at the Campus Center is anticipated at over 500 and 80,000 people nation-wide. A limited number of tickets may be available to students.

Motley Welcomes International Students

One of the first groups Dr. Keith Motley had to talk with when he became Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs last year were the people gathered at the International Students Orientation.

Now, a year later last week Motley addressed a new crop of students, gathered in McCormack Hall’s Ryan Lounge, as interim chancellor. “Just like you, this is new for me,” he said.

Motley encouraged students to approach him to talk, and to take advantage of advising and housing services. “You’re going through a lot, but you also have an exciting road ahead of you,” he said.

Motley also noted that students sit in classrooms with other students from all around the country, around the corner, and around the world. “We don’t have typical American students here,” he said.

Trustee Meetings Moved Closer Together

UMass Board of Trustees meetings will be combined to take place over the course of two days, according to a schedule issued for 2005.

In the past, the board had its committee meetings at One Beacon Street in Boston and were spread out over several weeks leading up to the main quarterly meeting at one of the campuses.

Some meetings will remain at the UMass President’s Offices on Beacon Street, but nearly all committee meetings have been moved to take place the day before the main meeting. For example, at UMass Lowell on February 15, 2005, the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs, the Audit Committee, the Development Committee, and the Committee of the Whole will all meet at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m., respectively.

The move may be a move to make it easier for out-of-state trustees (such as Romney appointees Christine Cassel of Pennsylvania and John DiBiaggio of Colorado) to actually show up. It might also help some Massachusetts trustees. According to the Republican, Trustee Robert McCarthy missed fifty-percent of the 10 meetings, while James E. Mahoney and William F. Kennedy missed forty-percent.

The UMass President’s Office is also working on legislation allowing trustees to teleconference.

The trustees next meet at UMass Boston on November 10.
