Well folks, it’s been a pretty crazy week in the world of sports, and because I can’t pick one subject, I’m gonna try to talk about all of them…Firstly, did anyone see that FIU-UM brawl? That’s the hardest hitting I’ve seen from the Canes all year. It’s just another in a string of disappointments from a program that a couple of years ago set a record for having players drafted in the first round and this year will probably have none. In an odd twist to this story the only person to lose their job in connection with the incident was radio analyst Lamar Thomas, a former UM player, who during the melee and live on the air expressed interest in joining the brawl and suggested that the FIU team got what they deserved for coming to play in the orange bowl…Speaking of fired analysts, the Steve Lyons situation is somewhat of a joke, but for a guy who has been warned and reprimanded in the past for comments he has made on the air, and for someone who has been in the business as long as Lyons, you’d think he would have a little more common sense than to say what he said. Come on “Psycho”, you know better than that… For those of you who are upset that the Patriots failed to acquire Randy Moss over the trade deadline you should know that the deal wasn’t even close to being pulled off and that the whole saga was a media creation. I have it on very good authority from a source high up in the Patriots administration that not only did the Raiders never even call the Patriots about Moss, or vice-versa, but that even if the Raiders had called there is absolutely zero chance that the Patriots would have even discussed such a trade…Is there anything sweeter than watching a baseball post-season without the presence of the and Yankees? I can’t help but smile when I think about George Steinbrenner’s head exploding after spending more than twice the dollar amount per win than any team in the history of professional sports and still not even making it past the first round of the playoffs despite guaranteeing a World Series victory in spring training. If the Yankees don’t win it next year we could see the first time ever that an entire team is released after the season… After watching the recent Sunday night football game featuring a match-up between the Broncos and the Raiders I have come to the conclusion that there has never been a worse team than the Oakland Raiders in the recent history of the NFL, period. The Raiders, one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, are quickly developing the reputation as the poster-child for futility in the NFL. They have repeatedly wasted high draft picks on busts (Robert Gallery, Phillip Buchannon), destroyed their team chemistry by bringing in malcontents (Randy Moss), and attempted to remedy the problem by hiring a coaching staff consisting of a head coach who hasn’t been in that role for more than a decade (Art Shell) and an offensive coordinator who spent the last year running a bed and breakfast in Idaho (Tom Walsh). These guys have such an outdated concept of how to scheme in today’s NFL that they might as well be running the Packer Sweep. The sad thing is as long as Al Davis is still the owner of the team there is very little hope for a turn-around. Davis’ negative, maverick attitude and arrogance regarding his own knowledge of the game, combined with his declining mental faculties, will keep the Raiders locked in the NFL basement for years to come. The only bright side: Davis’ health has been deteriorating rapidly over the last couple of years, so there is a chance he could soon no longer be able to take an active role in managing the team. He and George Steinbrenner should just retire together so that they can devote all of their time to being miserable old S.O.Bs without the clutter of running a professional sports franchise…Finally, the D-Team of the Brookline-Jamaica Plain patriots Pop Warner football program, led by quarterback Harry Kraft (grandson of Pats owner Robert), are 4-2 and one win away from clinching a playoff berth. Their next game is this Sunday at Downs Field near Brookline village at 9:30. If you want to see the purest form of football, this is it.
