Beacon Update 1/29/2013

Men’s Basketball

9-9 (3-5 LEC)

The guys were pretty solid over the break, compiling a record of 3-5 that included a couple of nice conference wins over Plymouth State and Western Connecticut. They also managed to squeak by Bridgewater State in a one point thriller on their new court, 72-71. They fell to Tufts on the road 67-48 on Thursday. Junior Rahshjeem Benson is leading the team in scoring at 12.9 PPG. Vinny DeLucia isn’t far behind with 11.9. Benson also leads the way with 2.5 blocks per game. It’s safe to say that Benson has been a very pleasant surprise this year. The 30-year-old forward has brought experience and defensive toughness to a Beacons squad that lacked both of those qualities last year, which reflects in the team’s massive improvement this season.

Women’s Hockey

7-9-2 (4-5-2 ECAC)

The ladies have made some great strides this year. They fought off Stevenson University in the first round of the Codfish Bowl, 2-1 in their first game back from break before losing to Lake Forest in the finals, 5-1. They then hosted Buffalo State for back-to-back matches on January 8th and 9th, which they split. They have gone on a bit of a hot streak lately and haven’t lost since the 12th. The scoring has been dispersed very evenly amongst the ladies with Alli Greenberg, Emily Larosa and Emily Howard having six goals a piece and Sarahanne Cavolo, and Kayla Kiernan standing at five. In goal, Kailyn Burke has been a find with a 2.02 GAA and a very strong .920 save percentage. Things are definitely looking up for the Beacons as they enter the toughest part of their schedule, but they are certainly improving at the right time.
