After the last day of finals here at UMB, our darling campus usually looks like a barren desert. Not a soul is inclined to stay here any longer than they have to. You are free, students of UMass Boston! Go and do amazing things!

During break, students took part in a plethora of activities, some unmentionable in print. As for a group of twenty-two students, they took to the streets of Birmingham and West Palm Beach to donate their time, their man- (and woman-!) power and their souls to volunteer in these cities.

Eleven students travelled to Birmingham, Alabama to work on repairs following strong tornadoes that blew through the Southeast in April. They spent a week working with many different organizations and nonprofits. Eleven other students travelled to West Palm Beach, Florida to build houses with Habitat for Humanity, an independent, nonprofit, Christian housing ministry. Their work focused on building affordable homes.

So if you’re interested in this kind of thing, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement at [email protected]. They are accepting applications for the summer Detroit trip now!
