Condon short-changed

In a surprising move, volleyball head coach Terry Condon was not named Little East Coach of the Year, despite leading the Beacons to the conference championship game a year after going 15-14.

Keene State coach Bob Weiner took home the award despite directing the Owls to their second straight number-one seed in the Conference Tournament. A year ago, a stacked Keene State team went 25-12; this season, a similarly strong Owl team finished 29-8.

The Beacons, under Condon’s watch, jumped from a .517 winning percentage last year to a .735 winning percentage (25-9 record). At one point, the Beacons reeled off 15 wins in a 16-match span, partly due to Condon’s influence on the young team.

Some believe that Condon’s successful plea to rework the Conference volleyball schedule in future years upset some members of the old guard in the LEC. Condon even alluded to this fact in an earlier interview before the awards were announced.

“I’ll never be voted Coach of the Year after this weekend,” she joked following the committee meeting. It appears that sensitive LEC coaches have taken a petty shot at Condon based on off-court issues.
