Western Connecticut State Blank UMass, 4-0

The Beacons closed a disappointing season by losing to the Colonials of Western Connecticut State at the Clark Center last Saturday. The lost dropped the Beacons to an overall record of 0-16 and a Little East Conference of 0-6.

The Colonials got on the board first when senior midfielder Michele Babbington managed to trickle the ball by Beacon goalkeeper Kristen Bowes. The Colonials’ second goal came a little over six minutes later. Junior forward Cherie Bailey rushed down the right side and sent a cross kick where midfielder Jessica Freeman blasted a shot into the net.

WCS kept up sustained offensive pressure throughout the game. The play was rarely in Colonial territory. A big effort by Bowes (17 saves) kept the game from getting out of hand.

The second half began pretty much as the first half ended. A big push by the Colonials yielded their third goal of the game. Stacey Nunes split two Beacon defenders and beat a diving Bowes from fifteen feet out.

Jean Capone came in for Bowes with 23 minutes left in the game and she was kept on her toes by the forwards of WCS. Capone made a total of four saves but at 77:57, Colonial Christie Gillis sent a beautiful pass, as she was sliding on the ground, to Bailey, who put the ball pass the Beacon Goalkeeper to finish up the scoring.
