A ballroom full of 800 honors students from five countries shook maracas at the opening session of the Golden Key Society’s August international conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Golden Key International Honour Society brings together junior and senior students in the top 15% of their class. It provides them with opportunities to participate in career and social events, and to meet and network with other Golden Key members from around the globe.

UMB’s Golden Key Society chapter president Tony Masiello, and chapter advisor Anita Miller attended, as well as graduate advisor Christine Depalma, Joanne Depalma and myself. “The first thing I that struck me when I arrived was just how big of an event it was,” Masiello said. “There were hundreds of members there and I was impressed at how many countries and states were represented. This provided a great opportunity to talk to a diverse group of people about their individual chapters and the kinds of valuable work Golden Key is doing all around the world.”

A graduate school and career forum was offered for members to learn about their options after graduation. Informational sessions took place during the conference to help the students learn about Golden Key, attending graduate school, and succeeding in the business world.

“I had the opportunity to talk to representatives from some big-name graduate schools and organizations,” said Masiello, “including recruiters from Fortune 500 companies who all seemed quite interested in our Golden Key members.”

The UMB chapter of the Golden Key Society will be raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Boston Folk Festival on Sept. 16 and 17, by selling links for the “Links for Help and Hope,” an ongoing Golden Key event.

“There are a couple of things that I would like prospective members to know about Golden Key,” Masiello said. “First, membership in Golden Key is a recognition for their outstanding academic achievement and something they can be proud of. Also, becoming active in our chapter is a great way to get involved with social activities and community service projects.”
