Lady Beacons’ Tennis Wins in Impressive Fashion

The Lady Beacons earned their first victory of the season in a 9-0 shut out of Pine Minor College last Thursday on the road. Wonder-twins Aurora Lormeus and Emily Johnson returned to form in an easy victory over a cross-town foe.

After a very disappointing loss to Rhode Island College, the UMass Boston women’s tennis team regained their confidence and beat Pine Manor in impressive fashion. Lormeus and Johnson handily beat their opponents in doubles play, as did Britany Engel and Novita Dwei. Kristen Chan and Katie MacPherson had more difficulty but pulled off the win in an 8-6 nail biter.

In the singles matches, five of the six Lady Beacons cruised to easy victories against their opponents. Lormeus seemed to have some difficulty in facing Pine Manor’s number one, Laura Cecil. In the end, Lormeus soundly defeated her 6-2, 6-4, finishing her off with two back-hand winners and an ace.

Lormeus said about the victory, “This was an easy win for us. This win was especially great after our defeat to Rhode Island the other day. Everyone played extremely well and we’re very proud of this win.” Coach Berg was even more impressed with his first victory as the women’s head tennis coach saying, “It was good to see everyone get a win today. This is what we’ve been working for this entire season.”

When asked about the win on Thursday, assistant coach Denise B. Ridge said, “As last year’s number one [player] I think [former] Coach Cirbus did an excellent job in keeping this team alive and focused last year and [she] is partly responsible for the success we had today.”

After the match, the girls posed for a picture to commemorate their first victory of the season, a season that promises better things to come.
