The Mass Media

The pop culture that America is missing out on

Over the next few weeks the Mass Media’s culture and diversity section will be spotlighting some interesting developments in pop culture from around the world. We start our tour du monde with the Philippines, where famous boxers are releasing albums and acting in films. Angela Ojastro, a health science major claimed that anyone who knows boxing knows Manny Pacquiao. “He is a world famous boxer who has won many championship bouts,” Angela added, “he is a national icon. And he just recorded a new record.”Yes, it seems that in addition to his 7 world titles (each from its own weight class), this world class boxer is also a singer, and has appeared in several films. Though what he is most famous for is his boxing skills.Apparently, when people in the Philippines are not watching Manny Cave, they are watching the wildly popular game show Wowowee. According to liberal arts major Allyson Lujaros, Wowowee is a corny game show where contestants win money or prizes. “However,” Allyson continues, “it’s not like here where only one person wins, everybody on the show gets something. Plus there are dancing girls.”America needs more shows where everybody wins and girls dance; sounds like it has got something for everyone. For the record, this show can be viewed internationally, just speak to you cable provider. While it seems boxing and game shows are all the rage in the Philippines, kite flying and cricket are where it is in Pakistan: Tayyab Inan, a health science major explained. “Kite flying is a very serious sport in Pakistan. But that’s because it’s not kite flying like Americans think of kite flying. Our kites are very specialized for speed and maneuverability, the strings they are attached to are covered in glass filaments. The point of Pakistani kite flying is to sever you opponents’ string sending his kite hurtling to the ground.”Cricket, surprising as it may seem, is also a very big thing in Pakistan. In fact, Pakistan is the home country of Wasim Akram, one of the best -if not the best- cricket players in the world.Sports have a definite prominence in any culture but what about music? what are they listening to in say South Korea? Well, psychology major Akino Chuigyn had the answer: ‘There is this girl group SNSD, they are crazy popular over there it’s ridiculous and I believe they just released a new album.”Indeed the 9 member girl pop band has just released their second full length album entitled «OH! » It has earned several Korean music awards mostly for being one of the few bands to gain international notoriety. And in case anyone is interested SNSD is an acronym for So Nyeo, Shi Dae or So Nyuh Shi Dae, whichever you prefer.
