Day of Service

Across the nation, in big and small ways, millions volunteered for the National Day of Service on Saturday, October 22nd. Over 100 UMB students joined the effort, sponsored by the Hands on Network, and broke off into groups of 8-10 to volunteer at sites around the city.

“It brought a bunch of random people together for a good cause,” said UMB volunteer Issac Weekes. “We painted a mural. It was a unique experience . . . It’s not my first time volunteering, and it won’t be my last.”
The Day of Service was organized by the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement.
Junior Pena, a sophomore that works in Student Activities, helped coordinate the Day of Service and led a team to the Dorchester Daniel Marr, Boys and Girls club.
“It was good to know where your effort was going,” Pena said. “You could actually see the benefits of you being there, and that was just a great feeling.” Evita Gonzalez, a dedicated volunteer for OSLCE and a site leader at Father Bill’s and Mainstream Homeless Shelter said of her experience “Father Bill’s really changed my perspective on the image of homelessness.” Evita and her group spent the morning helping the shelter prepare to paint the shelter’s resource room.
The Day of Service had a huge impact on the students who volunteered, and when asked what they would change about this new experience the majority of the volunteers asked for only one thing “more time.”
