It is September and fall sports are in full swing at U Mass Boston. It will be my job to bring the sports to the student body viz the Mass Media. Our University is unique. Our campus is built on Colombia Point, which juts out into Dorchester Bay. Our location provides opportunities for water sports, but our location limits the ability to house other sports such as football and baseball. Much has been done in the past decade to clean up the Harbor and Crawford Beach is now open for swimming. The University provides sailboats and sailing classes. Colombia Point is one of coldest windiest places during storms. So this is our lot. Our University’s mascot is the Beacon, which is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as 1. A signaling or guiding device, such as a lighthouse, located on a coast. 2. A radio transmitter that emits a characteristic guidance signal for aircraft. 3. A source of guidance or inspiration. 4. A signal fire, especially one used to warn of enemy’s approach. The Beacon’s mascot is a cartoonish lighthouse that wears gloves and waders. The Beacon is an apt name for our teams because Boston’s earliest neighborhood is called Beacon Hill and Beacons are associated with peninsulas. U Mass Boston competes in fourteen intercollegiate sports: Cross Country, Tennis, Men and Women’s soccer, Men and Women’s basketball, Men and Women’s Ice Hockey, Softball, Volleyball, Men’s Lacrosse and Baseball. The Beacons compete within the NCAA division III. The Beacons compete against temas in the Little East Conference (ECAC) such as University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Rhode Island College Anchormen. The Beacons also play local schools like the Emerson College Lions and the Newbury College NightHawks. Our University has other non NCAA competitive clubs such as the UMB Table Tennis Club which is a member of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association and competes against the Harvard Crimson and the Brown Bears. There are other intramural sporting events at U Mass Boston, Dodge Ball, Racquetball, 3 on 3 Basketball, Squash, and something called a Korn Hole league, which if you are interested meets at the Beacon Fitness Center Aerobics Room, Fridays at 4 PM beginning October 7th. Upcoming Sporting Events include a home men’s soccer game against the Emerson Lions on Thursday the 22nd at 3:30. And a women’s soccer match at home against the Rhode Island College Anchormen, Saturday the 24th at 1 PM. Other than that there is the Beacon Fitness Center which requires a minimal amount of paper work and zero money to join. There are the occasional pick up games or other like event around campus. Buenos Tardes Amigos.
