The Mass Media

“Silent Epidemic” Advertising

I was extremely disgusted to open this week’s issue of The Mass Media only to find anti-choice propaganda. The cover, displaying urban hipsters with hospital masks, is clearly a ploy on the part of the Human Life Alliance to trick students into reading their supplement.I am not even sure where to begin criticizing the contents. This blatant propaganda is meant to persuade college-aged women (and, I assume, men) that a woman’s right to choose is not only invalid, but that abortion is an epidemic.

As a woman and member of the UMass Boston community, I am deeply concerned that such overtly one-sided anti-choice advertising is being dispersed through our student newspaper. The last time I checked, women still have the right to choose what we do with our bodies. It is groups such the Human Life Alliance that are vying to take away our rights.I urge you to consider the impact of such advertising.

Would you please at least provide the other side of the argument? The purpose of a student-run college newspaper should be to connect the students, not upset us.

Thank you, Monica Canfield-LenfestStudent
