Cuts Expected at Amherst

The Athletic Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is being asked to cut a total of 2.5 million dollars from next year’s budget. Decisions regarding specific cuts should come at the end of June.

UMass Amherst athletic director Ian McGraw said in a recent Boston Herald article, “this is not matter of laying off a secretary or manager. This issue requires significant attention at the highest level of the university.”

Despite the recent developments of budget cuts, some officials at Umass Amherst have suggested the football program may make a push to becoming a Division I program. Currently, the team plays in Division IAA. For this to happen, it would mean expanding existing facilities, and increasing the number of scholarships.
