Halloween Party For Peace

On Thursday, October 31 starting one hour before dusk there will be a “Halloween Party for Peace”. The objectives of the peaceful gathering are to show desire for peaceful resolutions, to cast a “spell” against the “evil” of war. The organizers ask that participants bring a musical instrument and a candle. Any and all are welcome to attend. The organizers are “inviting many peace-loving musical guests to perform for peace, more to come.”

Inclusive Debate to Take Place

According to the State House News the next gubernatorial debate will include all of the five remaining leading candidates. Previous debates have excluded Libertarian candidate Carla Howell, the Green Party’s Jill Stein, and Independent candidate Barbara Johnson, all who will be allowed to address a large television audience of voters. The last debate, scheduled for October 29, will include only the two major party candidates Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Shannon O’Brien.

$6 Million More in Cuts to Higher Ed

Acting Governor Jane Swift used her executive authority to cut a total of $6 million from the University system and state and community colleges system in Massachusetts, $3 million from each. According to UMass Amherst’s Campus Chronicle, Swift said that the publig higher education cuts are an “unfortunate but unavoidable effect of the continued economic uncertainty” in the Commonwealth.

Upcoming Forum on October 29

A forum entitled “U.S. English Only and Racism: Rolling Back Democracy” will take place on Tuesday, October 29 at 7pm in the Faculty Club on the eleventh floor of the Healey Library. Featured speakers include: Bessie Dendrinos, from the University of Athens; Jim Crawford, a writer on Language Policy; and Jim Cummins, of the University of Toronto. The forum will be sponsored by the College of Public and Community Service and the Graduate Program in Applied Linguistics in partnership with TAG/Alerta Program and Boston Public Schools.

Human Services Career Fair

The UMB Career Services department will be holding a Human Services Career Fair from 2-5pm. The location is still to be announced and the event will take place on Wednesday, October 30. This is an industry-specific event designed to bring together the top organizations in Human Services and the future leaders in the industry from UMass Boston.
