Free Email Up And Running

UMass Boston students have been receiving letters from Registrar David Cesario detailing the new Web-based email services available to all students. “It’s free, easy to use, and available for life,” noted Cesario.

A letters to each student lists their individual login ID and password. To use the email, connect to the internet and go to http://webmail.umb.edu. Enter your user name and password and click “OK.” According to Cesario, the new email system does not require any training for students familiar with email. A series of workshops have been scheduled for first-time email users. The Student Email Workshops are being held at the Student Computer Lab, Upper Level, Healey Library. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The schedule for workshops is: Monday, Oct. 1 and Wednesday, Oct. 3, 3 to 5pm, White Lab; Friday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 12, 10 am to noon, White Lab.

The security of the system requires that a Web browser supports “high level encryption.” Internet Explorer Version 5 or higher is recommended. In order to upgrade a Web browser, go to the download section of Microsoft’s Web site at www.microsoft.com. (Web browsers are free.)

One of the goals of the new email system is to “enhance communication” between students, faculty and the administration. UMB plans to inform students of University business through this new email system.

Cesario explained that students who do not plan to use their new student Web mail address as their regular email account, may arrange to forward messages to an email account of their choice. To do so, they should send an email to [email protected] or call (617) 287-6223.
